Chairman of the LACNIC Board Highlights Transparency of the Organization

The Chairman of the LACNIC Board of Directors, Warder Maia, highlighted the transparency of the organization responsible for managing Internet number resources for Latin America and the Caribbean and explained that all its resolutions and minutes are available to the community on the Regional Internet Registry’s website.

During his presentation at LACNIC 33, Maia expressed his gratitude for the high number of participants on the first day of activities of LACNIC’s first online event, adding that once the health emergency is over there will be time to organize a face-to-face meeting with “friends and community members” of the region.

The director commented on the different forms of work implemented by the Board during 2019, with nine annual remote meetings and three face-to-face meetings, two of them during LACNIC’s annual events and the third at the closing of the year.

He also noted that, in 2019, the Board of Directors devoted time and effort to make sure that the organization’s participation spaces are inclusive and safe and thus favor a broad and diverse exchange of ideas. He stressed that, last year, the Board worked on the creation of documents containing LACNIC’s Transparency Guideline and the LACNIC Community Code of Conduct. In this sense, Maia observed that transparency is one of the key values of LACNIC, which is why the organization does its best to facilitate access to the information it generates.

In his presentation, the chairman of the LACNIC Board mentioned two resolutions adopted by the organization during 2019: its positioning on website blocking and the positioning of LACNIC for the acceleration of IPv6 deployment.

With the Community. Laura Kaplan, Head of Development and Cooperation at LACNIC, presented a report on the organization’s actions with the regional community. In this report, she highlighted the identification and removal of obstacles for the full participation of women in IT in LACNIC events, the restructuring of the FRIDA program with a new focus on Internet stability and security, and the presentation of a book titled “LACNIC Community Development” together with other regional organizations.
