The Most Outstanding Presences and Videos of LACNIC 29

The LACNIC 29 meeting provided outstanding presentations on the importance of IPv6 development, network routing complexities, novel scenarios on cyber threats and a new process to elaborate LACNIC Community Policies, among other relevant issues.
More than 620 face-to-face attendees from 34 countries and another 2600 remote followers of the conferences and talks via streaming, marked the success of a meeting that brought together representatives from the entire LACNIC community.
Convincing Your Boss. Lee Howard, a leading IPv6 expert, spoke about how best to convince a company’s boss on the need to implement this Internet protocol. Howard stressed that, based on solid arguments, it is possible to develop a data-based business for any company, taking into account its own priorities. In his presentation, Howard highlighted emerging opportunities and showed how IPv6 can be placed above the company’s other priorities. To watch the video click here.
Internet of Insecure Things. Bob Hinden addressed the Internet of Things development with a novel approach and from a security perspective. He first told the story of how IPv6 was developed and provided an update on where we are today and the challenges that lie ahead. He then approached Internet security issues to finally present security challenges of the Internet of Things, recent attacks based on the IoT and some ideas for possible solutions. Challenges and Solutions to the Global Routing System. In his conference, Job Snijders rated the complex Internet routing ecosystem of interconnections in different autonomous systems (ASNs). He outlined the main challenges to ensure the routing system security and gave the example of routing incidents that have an impact on media headlines due to configuration errors or malicious activities. He stressed the importance of creating BGP filters to protect Internet operations and transactions, and ensured that all ecosystem members play an important role in the network’s mutual protection. New Internet Attackers. Nicolas Waisman, a computer security specialist, spoke at length about how attackers have adapted to technological changes. He also asked whether Internet experts really knew what they were defending the network against or who should be prosecuted on the Internet. To watch the video click here.
Open Source Tools. During LACNIC’s Technical Forum, which had its first edition at LACNIC 29, José Leitao and Daniel Rodriguez from Facebook shared with the community an innovative project on building a NetNorad version using open source tools. To see the presentation click here.
Network Operators. During the Latin American and Caribbean Network Operators Forum (LACNOG), Alvaro Retana, Vice President of Strategies and Technologies at Huawei, gave an outstanding talk. He referred to the state-of-the art technology to manage networks based on data models. To see the complete presentation click here.
A Simpler Model. During LACNIC’s Public Policy Forum, consensus was reached on an important modification of the Policy Development Process (PDP). Proposed by Jordi Palet, the community agreed to enable a policy that seeks consensus to be determined by a balance between the comments in the policy list and the forum discussion. Moderators will have two weeks to decide whether or not a proposal reached consensus. In addition, Palet’s proposal incorporates an appeals process in case of disagreement with the consensus.
