Nearly 500 Members of the Community Participated in the LACNIC 33 IPv6 Tutorial

LACNIC 33, the first online event organized by the Regional Internet Registry (RIR) for Latin America and the Caribbean, kicked off with more than 1,380 registered participants from 26 different countries of the region.

The meeting will continue throughout the week via the Zoom platform and will maintain the spirit that has characterized LACNIC’s annual meetings since its first major event in 2003.

“We were looking forward to sharing this event as planned (Cali) and hope that everyone is going through the global health emergency as best as possible. LACNIC is honored by your participation this week,” noted Macarena Segal, the event’s master of ceremonies, during her opening remarks before the LACNIC 33 IPv6 tutorial.

IPv6 addresses. Monday’s agenda included a broad and intensive tutorial on “IPv6 Network Operation” (in Spanish) presented by Alejandro Acosta, Uesley Correa and Jorge Cano.

During their presentations, the three instructors shared the theory and practical information on the development of IPv6 in the region, network operation in IPv6, and the mechanisms for transitioning from IPv4 to IPv6.

Acosta, who coordinated the tutorial, stressed that it is essential to increase the use of the IPv6 resources assigned by LACNIC to its members. The good news, he added, is that IPv6 penetration in Latin America reached 22.97% in April. Likewise, he encouraged operators and LACNIC members to implement IPv6 without fear. “There are more IPv6 addresses than stars in the universe,” Acosta noted. In turn, Correa observed that regional operators who have not yet deployed IPv6 and begin to take steps towards implementation still have time to do a good job.

Finally, Cano shared information on various transition mechanisms, especially Jool, a tool that has become a great facilitator of the transition from IPv4 to IPv6. This novel technology developed by NIC Mexico and TEC Monterrey allows communication between IPv4 nodes and IPv6 nodes without interrupting Internet access for users.

Comprised of 493 unique participants, the audience had many questions for the instructors, and this led to an enriching sharing of knowledge.

Virtual stand. Just as at our face-to-face events, the LACNIC staff is available to meet with participants at a virtual stand, where they will provide information and answer any questions participants may have. Those interested in scheduling an online meeting should click here to reserve a time slot. Among other topics, the LACNIC staff will be able to provide information on how to request resources, transfers, membership services, the Mi LACNIC API, IPv6, RPKI, the FRIDA program, the development of the LACNIC IRR, +RAÍCES, and the training offerings of the LACNIC Campus.
