My Experience with the LACNIC Campus

By Sergio Bustamante, Strategic Plans for Transport Networks Manager at Telecom Argentina

When Telecom set out to implement its IPv6 network, we already knew that IPv4 space was running out. We wanted to deploy IPv6 in an organized way but weren’t exactly sure where to begin. While searching for materials and guidelines, we discovered the LACNIC Campus, which provided everything we needed to take the first step. That’s how our journey with the Campus began.

A Practical Guide

Out of all the available content, the course on IPv6 in Last Mile and Access Networks was key. This material was particularly valuable because it offers a practical guide for tackling a deployment project in a network with many customers, such as ours. It helps with planning, makes it easier to avoid common mistakes, and encourages the adoption of best industry practices. Thanks to this structure, we were able to design the project without impacting user services, understanding what to do —and what not to do— at each stage.

Learning Based on Best Practices

One of the things I value most about the Campus is its neutral and practical approach. Unlike materials from other providers, Campus courses do not promote specific brands or solutions. Instead, they help you understand the complete picture and make the right decisions for your own network.

From Courses to Certification

After completing the first course, I continued exploring other topics that interested me until I decided to pursue one of the specializations offered by the Campus. This struck me as an excellent way to organize learning, as each specialization, for example, ISP, Data Center, or Campus Network Operation, guides you step by step, from basic concepts to more advanced topics, and helps you to apply what you learn to real projects.

In my case, I chose to work towards the certification in ISP Network Operation, a personal challenge and a great motivation to conclude this journey with a formal recognition of the knowledge I had gained.

Apply What You Learn, Share With Your Team

Everything we learned at the Campus went beyond theory, as we were able to apply the knowledge directly to Telecom’s network. Furthermore, we discovered that the material was not only useful for those involved in the IPv6 project, but it was also valuable for other teams.

For example, the course “Interconnecting with Public and Private Networks” was extremely useful for optimizing access to content among ISPs. Today, many of our teams—transport, access, networking, and security— use the Campus as part of their professional development.

Clear, Accessible, and Up-to-Date Content

One thing I particularly appreciate is how the Campus presents its contents: clear, accessible language, and no unnecessary technical terminology. In technology, this is not a minor advantage. The way topics are displayed allows you to advance intuitively, even on complex issues.

I am convinced these courses are useful not only for major companies but also for smaller ISPs, universities, and non-profit organizations. The content covers a broad spectrum and can serve both to train teams and to prepare new generations of professionals. A small ISP, for example, can find tools to optimize its resources and better understand its role within the Internet ecosystem.
