LACNIC announces that the final phase of IPv4 exhaustion has been triggered and Policy 11.1 is now in force. Under this policy, IPv4 addresses can only be assigned to organizations which have not yet received IPv4 space from LACNIC.<\/p>\n
Launching of Mi LACNIC<\/em>, a simpler, more user-friendly platform a platform that centralizes resource management and streamlines the relationship with members of the Internet Registry for Latin America and the Caribbean. The LACNIC Warning Advice and Reporting Point (WARP LACNIC<\/a>), the center that coordinates computer security incident responses for the members of the LACNIC community, concluded agreements with different organizations around the world devoted to the promotion of cybersecurity, data protection, and secure Internet connections.<\/p>\n Highlights include agreements with the Forum for Incident Response and Security Teams (FIRST), M3AAWG, Level 3, and Stop Think Connect.<\/p>\n The year’s first edition of LACNIC On The Move was held in the city of Guatemala and brought together more than one hundred delegates representing academia, civil society, and the technical and government sectors, who participated in high-level talks and technical training activities presented by experts.<\/p>\n This year, three Amparo workshops were held to train experts on computer security and the creation of a security incident response center. These training activities took place in Haiti, Suriname, and Medell\u00edn (Colombia). In all, close to 90 experts were trained throughout the region.<\/p>\n Ayitic Goes Global is an initiative of LACNIC and Canada’s International Development Research Center (IDRC) focused on training and employability which promotes the digital development of Haiti. The project seeks to increase women’s access to employment in Haiti by building digital capacities in the field of Information Technology.<\/p>\n The Canadian Government highlighted this project within the framework of the G20 as one of its emblematic initiatives to address the digital gender divide in developing countries.<\/p>\n The IPv6 protocol, key to the development and growth of the Internet, reached considerable levels of deployment and traffic in the region last year. This conclusion was shared by Information and Communication Technology (ICT) experts during the LACNIC 27 event, which brought together more than 735 participants.<\/p>\n Not only is the IPv6 protocol essential for promoting the development of the Internet of Things (IoT) in the region, it also constitutes a vital tool for connecting the 40% of Latin Americans who are still unable to access the Internet.<\/p>\n LACNIC 27, the most important meeting of Internet professionals in Latin America and the Caribbean, took place in Foz do Igua\u00e7\u00fa with the support of NIC.br and CGI.br.<\/p>\n During the LACNIC 27 meeting, LACNIC signed a cooperation agreement with the Latin American and Caribbean Regional At-Large Organization (LACRALO) to work jointly on the programs driven by both organizations and aimed at developing Internet infrastructure and services in the region.<\/p>\n The two organizations plan to work together to strengthen regional participation in the global Internet ecosystem by means of fellowship and outreach programs on issues involving Internet number resources.<\/p>\n This year, the LACNIC Campus increased its educational offerings with a new course: BGP Basics and Introduction to RPKI.<\/p>\n This training on BGP and RPKI adds to the Basic IPv6 and Advanced IPv6 courses offered by the LACNIC Campus and was designed in response to the region’s growing demand for computer-based distance learning. In 2017, a total of 12 courses were offered on LACNIC’s online learning platform.<\/p>\n The Regional Fund for Digital Innovation in Latin America and the Caribbean (FRIDA) is pleased to announce the three projects selected as the winners of the program’s 2017 edition.<\/p>\n Three innovative initiatives designed to address different educational and environmental challenges in the region will receive FRIDA funding this year: a platform for the development of digital educational media for rural communities in Cuba, a Brazilian initiative that promotes the adoption of a gender perspective in the digital rights ecosystem, and a proposal to install weather stations in schools using the Internet to deal with natural disasters in Dominica.<\/p>\n The winning proposals were selected among 312 initiatives received from 23 different countries as a result of this year’s call for projects \u2013 149 projects in the FRIDA Awards and 163 in the FRIDA Grants categories.<\/p>\n This month kicked off the process for rolling over the root zone key signing key (KSK). This will be the first time these cryptographic keys are modified since they were initially generated. The process began on 11 July, when the new Domain Name System security extensions (DNSSEC) KSK key was published.<\/p>\n For an entire week, Montevideo hosted the most important Internet event in Latin America and the Caribbean, LACNIC 28, a great excuse to celebrate the 15th<\/sup> anniversary of the organization responsible for managing Internet number resources for Latin America and the Caribbean (LACNIC).<\/p>\n During the week starting on 18 September, the Uruguayan capital welcomed special guests and Internet experts to analyze the impact of the Information Society in Latin America and the Caribbean, the status of the Internet of Things in the region, as well as to discuss major cybersecurity threats. The meeting was organized jointly with ANTEL and AGESIC and took place at the Hotel Radisson Victoria Plaza from 18 to 22 September.<\/p>\n The Hackathon organized by LACNIC<\/a> and AGESIC took place the weekend following the LACNIC 28 – LACNOG 2017 event. This activity brought together interesting challenges and participants willing to contribute to those ideas.<\/p>\n LACNIC announces the creation of the LACNIC Technical Forum, which will unify the work of the Security, Interconnection and IPv6 Forums. Its first edition will take place in Panama within the framework of LACNIC 29 (23-27 April).<\/p>\n The LACNIC Board welcomed the ICANN Board at Casa de Internet<\/em> in the city of Montevideo to celebrate 15 years of work and dedication to Internet development in Latin America and the Caribbean.<\/p>\n Over these 15 years of sustained and constant growth, the construction of a Latin American and Caribbean Internet community and the successful management of number resources has been possible thanks to the participation of multiple stakeholders.<\/p>\n Within the framework of the LACNIC 28 – LACNOG 2017 meeting in Montevideo, Jos\u00e9 Clastornik received the 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award for his permanent efforts to promote equitable Internet development in the region and especially in Uruguay, the country where he heads the e-Government Agency (AGESIC).<\/p>\n LACNIC is celebrating its 15th<\/sup> anniversary as a Regional Internet Registry (RIR) with more than 7,000 members throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.<\/p>\n The number of member organizations in the 33 territories included in the LACNIC service region doubled over the past three years. This month, the organization reached 7,200 members.<\/p>\n LACNIC has been contributing to regional Internet development since its inception in 2012, promoting and advocating for the multiple, diverse interests of the Latin American and Caribbean community.<\/p>\n LACNIC has been working this way for 15 years, something which has only been possible thanks to the constant support and collaboration of the community through the various participation and dialogue spaces created to listen to and learn from others.<\/p>\n This year we interviewed fifteen members of the community who were and continue to be part of LACNIC’s history.
