Using data collected through the Speedchecker measurement platform, we analyzed the paths taken by data packets from each country to the rest of the region, including information on intermediate hops and observed latencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This work builds upon the connectivity study carried out in 2023 <a href=\"https:\/\/imasd.lacnic.net\/en\/interconnection\/analysis-of-the-paths-followed-by-traffic-within-each-country-of-lac-region\">the paths followed by traffic within each country of the LAC region.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At LACNIC, we promote different types of Internet measurements across the countries in the region and at the interconnection level throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. These measurements help us understand the state of connectivity between networks in the countries within our area of \u200b\u200binfluence and allow operators to use the information to improve network performance and interoperability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a><\/a>2025 Traffic Paths Study<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/imasd.lacnic.net\/en\/interconnection\/analysis-of-paths-from-each-country-to-the-rest-of-the-region\"><u>In this study<\/u><\/a> we considered traceroute measurements originating in each country in the LAC region and destined for all other countries. We examined average latency and hop patterns and added an analysis of visualizations at the subregional level:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Central America<\/strong>: Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, and El Salvador<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>South America<\/strong>: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Venezuela<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Caribbean<\/strong>: Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Trinidad and Tobago<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>First, we analyzed the average latency from each country to the rest of the region, as shown in the graph below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"342\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lacnic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/fig1-estudio-de-caminos-desde-cada-pais-hacia-lac-1024x342.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32179\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lacnic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/fig1-estudio-de-caminos-desde-cada-pais-hacia-lac-1024x342.png 1024w, https:\/\/blog.lacnic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/fig1-estudio-de-caminos-desde-cada-pais-hacia-lac-300x100.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.lacnic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/fig1-estudio-de-caminos-desde-cada-pais-hacia-lac-680x227.png 680w, https:\/\/blog.lacnic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/fig1-estudio-de-caminos-desde-cada-pais-hacia-lac-768x257.png 768w, https:\/\/blog.lacnic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/fig1-estudio-de-caminos-desde-cada-pais-hacia-lac-1536x514.png 1536w, https:\/\/blog.lacnic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/fig1-estudio-de-caminos-desde-cada-pais-hacia-lac.png 1944w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The measurements indicate that interconnection paths vary depending on the origin-destination country pair. In general, we observed that the latency of hops that leave the LACNIC region is higher than that of hops that remain within the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the data was analyzed by subregion, latencies were generally consistent. For example, the following image shows the ASNs appearing the most frequently on paths originating in and destined for South America:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"207\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lacnic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/fig10-estudio-de-caminos-desde-cada-pais-hacia-lac-2048x413-1-1024x207.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32185\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lacnic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/fig10-estudio-de-caminos-desde-cada-pais-hacia-lac-2048x413-1-1024x207.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.lacnic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/fig10-estudio-de-caminos-desde-cada-pais-hacia-lac-2048x413-1-300x60.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.lacnic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/fig10-estudio-de-caminos-desde-cada-pais-hacia-lac-2048x413-1-680x137.jpg 680w, https:\/\/blog.lacnic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/fig10-estudio-de-caminos-desde-cada-pais-hacia-lac-2048x413-1-768x155.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.lacnic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/fig10-estudio-de-caminos-desde-cada-pais-hacia-lac-2048x413-1-1536x310.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blog.lacnic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/fig10-estudio-de-caminos-desde-cada-pais-hacia-lac-2048x413-1.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The data shows that, within South America, certain Brazilian ASNs and ASNs with a global presence (WW) are the most frequently observed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This study helped us gain a better understanding of how the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean are interconnected, not only by examining average latencies between country pairs, but also by identifying the actual paths followed by traffic and the autonomous systems involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overall, the data shows that latency increases when traffic leaves the region, but it also reveals an interesting finding: in Central America and the Caribbean, it is sometimes faster for traffic to leave the region than to communicate with South America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We invite you to read the full report available <a href=\"https:\/\/imasd.lacnic.net\/en\/interconnection\/analysis-of-paths-from-each-country-to-the-rest-of-the-region\">here<\/a> and use these results as a starting point for your own analyses, compare them with local measurements, and explore opportunities for optimizing your networks.
