{"id":31267,"date":"2025-10-02T14:41:48","date_gmt":"2025-10-02T14:41:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.lacnic.net\/?p=31267"},"modified":"2025-10-07T14:42:01","modified_gmt":"2025-10-07T14:42:01","slug":"state-of-the-internet-in-el-salvador","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lacnic.net\/en\/state-of-the-internet-in-el-salvador\/","title":{"rendered":"State of the Internet in El Salvador"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>By <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.lacnic.net\/en\/author\/elisa-peirano\/\">Elisa Peirano<\/a>, R&amp;D Data Analyst<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In preparation for our upcoming annual event, LACNIC&nbsp;44 LACNOG&nbsp;2025, to be held in El Salvador, we examined the current landscape of the Internet in our host country considering several sources of information consolidated under <a href=\"https:\/\/reporte-pais.labs.lacnic.net\/\">Internet Measurements by Country<\/a>.*<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This report presents key indicators on the state of the Internet in El Salvador, including BGP announcements, RIPE Atlas platform coverage, MANRS implementation, as well as IPv6 and RPKI adoption. This data provides a comprehensive view of Internet performance in the country and seeks to support decisions aimed at strengthening Internet infrastructure and resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>BGP Announcements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The image on the left shows the percentage of announced ASNs by type. Average AS PATH length for El Salvador&#8217;s neighboring countries is as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Costa Rica: 4.74<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mexico: 4.78<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Guatemala: 5.22<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Honduras: 5.6<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>RIPE Atlas<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lacnic.net\/1000\/1\/lacnic\/ripe-atlas-en-latinoamerica-y-caribe\">RIPE Atlas<\/a> is an open, free Internet measurement platform. It has extensive capacity for measuring latencies, traceroutes, DNS, HTTP, NTP, and more. It relies on community participation to host probes and thus achieve sufficient coverage to collect complete and impartial data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Only four probes are connected in El Salvador. This number is not only insufficient to provide meaningful and representative data for the country; it also prevents its inclusion in interconnection studies. It promotes the adoption of well-established industry best practices and technological solutions by those running BGP to address the most common threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The table below shows the level of readiness for each metric in El Salvador:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1546\" height=\"644\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lacnic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/fig4-estado-el-salvador.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31217\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lacnic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/fig4-estado-el-salvador.png 1546w, https:\/\/blog.lacnic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/fig4-estado-el-salvador-300x125.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.lacnic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/fig4-estado-el-salvador-1024x427.png 1024w, https:\/\/blog.lacnic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/fig4-estado-el-salvador-680x283.png 680w, https:\/\/blog.lacnic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/fig4-estado-el-salvador-768x320.png 768w, https:\/\/blog.lacnic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/fig4-estado-el-salvador-1536x640.png 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1546px) 100vw, 1546px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As shown in the image above, El Salvador has 100% filtering, which significantly contributes to the security and resilience of the network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the case of RPKI (56.8%) and routes registered in an IRR (73%), there is still a long way to go, as these numbers are lower than those of Guatemala (60% and 81.7%) and Costa Rica (67.5% and 83.8%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, coordination still requires significant improvement, as it is also below that of their neighbors Guatemala and Honduras (43% and 31.8%, respectively).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>IPv6 Adoption<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, El Salvador has an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lacnic.net\/5530\/1\/lacnic\/despliega-ipv6\">IPv6<\/a> adoption rate of almost 20%. This makes it possible to validate that BGP announcements are not being made by unauthorized autonomous systems and that Internet traffic is not being diverted along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because RPKI deployment is not yet universal, validation results can vary. Prefixes identified as \u201cvalid\u201d are protected by RPKI and can be considered trustworthy. Those identified as \u201cnot found\u201d are not yet protected by RPKI. \u201cInvalid\u201d is used for incorrect or malicious announcements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the case of El Salvador, the percentage of prefixes covered by RPKI ROAs is 93.4%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This chart was taken from the <a href=\"https:\/\/monitor.fortproject.net\/es\/rpki_map\">FORT Monitor Project<\/a> and shows the percentage of valid and invalid IPv4 Prefix\/Origin AS pairs covered by RPKI ROAs by country. As RPKI deployment grows, the number of unprotected (not found) prefixes will decrease and the accuracy with which invalid prefixes are identified will increase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1404\" height=\"1196\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lacnic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/fig7-estado-el-salvador.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31226\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lacnic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/fig7-estado-el-salvador.png 1404w, https:\/\/blog.lacnic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/fig7-estado-el-salvador-300x256.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.lacnic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/fig7-estado-el-salvador-1024x872.png 1024w, https:\/\/blog.lacnic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/fig7-estado-el-salvador-387x330.png 387w, https:\/\/blog.lacnic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/fig7-estado-el-salvador-768x654.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1404px) 100vw, 1404px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This review of various aspects of the Internet in El Salvador shows the efforts that are on the right track and the areas that still require attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Expanding the coverage of RIPE Atlas measurement probes is particularly important.
