As AI adoption accelerates, it brings new demands: higher energy consumption, advanced cooling systems, low-latency connectivity, and scalability.<br>At LACNIC 43, industry leaders addressed these challenges during the panel <a href=\"https:\/\/lacnic43.lacnic.net\/en\/programme\/agenda\/plenary?day=06\/05\/2025&amp;name=datacenters-in-the-age-of-ai-challenges-and-opportunities\"><em>\u201cData Centers in the Age of AI,\u201d<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>led by Tom\u00e1s Lynch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>Infrastructure Is Growing, but Not Evenly Distributed<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOver 60% of data center infrastructure is still managed in-house,\u201d said Heubert River, Head of Data Center Operations at Cirion in Brazil. In other words, a significant share of the infrastructure remains under internal company management\u2014an approach that often falls short when it comes to meeting AI\u2019s growing scalability demands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In countries like Brazil, the majority of large data centers are located in the South and Southeast, while regions such as the Northeast continue to lag behind.<br>Even though the country\u2019s energy mix is made up of 93% clean sources, the distribution infrastructure poses a significant challenge. As River noted, \u201cThe energy exists, but it doesn\u2019t get where it needs to go.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Diversifying Geography to Improve Connectivity<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Esther Fern\u00e1ndez, from Telxius, emphasized that many coastal cities\u2014such as Barranquilla, Fortaleza, or Valpara\u00edso\u2014offer key advantages.<br>\u201cThese cities serve as landing points for submarine cables and are located closer to renewable energy sources,\u201d she explained. Their strategic location positions them as ideal alternatives to relieve pressure on overcrowded data center hubs like S\u00e3o Paulo or Santiago, while also improving service latency and resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Air Cooling Is No Longer Enough<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>AI is pushing energy consumption and heat generation in data centers to unprecedented levels. In warmer climates, relying on free cooling\u2014that is, using outside air\u2014is no longer a viable option. This has led to the rise of more efficient technologies such as direct liquid cooling (DLC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA data center is basically a toaster\u2014all the energy that goes in turns into heat,\u201d said Frederico Neves of NIC.br.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, the goal is to lower Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) to values between 1.2 and 1.3, compared to the 1.7 range that was considered efficient just ten years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Developing Talent: A Critical Priority<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Rafael Astuto, from Ascenty, pointed out that the biggest challenge is not building data centers\u2014it is finding qualified people to run them. \u201cThere simply aren\u2019t enough technicians trained in key areas like liquid cooling and high-density infrastructure management,\u201d he noted. \u201cIt is urgent that technical schools and universities begin incorporating these subjects into their training programs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Looking Ahead: Edge, Repatriation, and Sustainability<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>River highlighted two key trends: moving workloads back from the cloud to on-premise infrastructure, and the growth of edge data centers closer to users. In the coming years, data centers of 200\u2013300 MW are expected to expand, though not widely distributed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With global energy demand on the rise\u2014U.S. data centers may double their share from 4% in just five years\u2014some countries are considering nuclear power. In Latin America, the focus will stay on energy efficiency and thermal management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The AI Paradox<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the end, panelists agreed that AI can help improve energy efficiency in data centers, predict system failures, and streamline operations. The challenge lies in applying it smartly, adapting solutions to each country\u2019s water, climate, and social realities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AI will play a key role in shaping the future of data centers across the region. Realizing its full potential will require investment in infrastructure, skilled talent, energy efficiency, and strategic planning.
