IXP.GT of Guatemala, Telefonica of El\nSalvador, PIT Peru, and the National University Council (CNU) of Nicaragua are\nthe organizations selected this year by LACNIC’s +RAICES Program<\/a> to install copies of the\noriginal Internet root servers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sixteen Latin American and Caribbean\norganizations expressed their interest in hosting a root server copy and responded\nto the call for proposals launched by +RAICES in 2020. Four beneficiaries have\nbeen selected so far, although the number of organizations may later be increased\ndepending on our agreements with DNS root server operators (RSOs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the study titled Use of DNS Root Servers in Latin\nAmerica<\/a>, the installation of these root server copies has substantially improved\nresponse times for most Latin American and Caribbean countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

LACNIC’s +RAICES project has allowed\ninstalling close to 40 root server copies across the region. This project seeks\nto strengthen Internet infrastructure in Latin America and the Caribbean, noted\nGuillermo Cicileo, Head of Internet Infrastructure Research and Development at\nLACNIC and responsible for the +Ra\u00edces program. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Proposals selected in 2020.<\/strong> The selection process was\nbased on different considerations, including countries with no root server\ncopies supported by the program or with a limited number of copies, locations\nwhere the installation of a root server copy would benefit the highest number\nof users, and locations interconnected with an important number of autonomous\nsystems. These considerations, however, were not exclusive, as a balance among\nthese and other criteria was sought in agreement with the DNS root server\noperators involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now that the organizations that will\nhost the copies have been selected, the next step is to sign the\nconfidentiality agreements and advance in the purchase and possible process for\nimporting the root servers in each country. The installation phase will begin\nonce a server reaches its destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The installation of new mirror copies\nof the DNS root zone in Latin America and the Caribbean will allow response\ntimes (round trip time to the server) to continue to improve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since 2013, LACNIC issues an annual\ncall for proposals to encourage the deployment of root servers in the LAC\nregion, promoting their installation for the purpose of improving Internet\ninfrastructure.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
