To do so, it has launched RPKI Resiliency, a project\nthat integrates different areas of critical infrastructure, security,\noperations, cryptography and the legal framework in order to improve RPKI\ninfrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nathalie K\u00fcnneke-Trenaman, Routing\nSecurity Program Manager for the RIPE NCC, noted that the initiative seeks to\nstrengthen a key part of Internet operations, following concerns raised about\nthe current state of the global RPKI infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During her interview with LACNIC\nNews, Trenaman said that the findings and improvements detected thanks to the\nRPKI Resiliency project will be presented to the community in the final quarter\nof 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is the project about?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The RPKI resiliency project is a holistic, multi-phased project which\naims to increase the resiliency of our RPKI infrastructure by assessing and\nimproving five different areas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Technical infrastructure<\/strong>: have an infrastructure and software\ndevelopment processes that aim to provide world-class RPKI services. Examples\nof areas being evaluated: high availability, scalability, redundancy, quality\nassurance, DevOps, 24\/7 support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Security<\/strong>: ensure that the system is protected against digital attacks.\nExamples of areas being evaluated: penetration and vulnerability testing,\nregular security audits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>Operational procedures<\/strong>: ensure the integrity of the RPKI\nTrust Anchor by having reliable, transparent and trustworthy operational\nprocedures. Examples of procedures are key signing and key rollover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>Cryptography<\/strong>: Increase the trust in our system by having\na third-party assessing our code and making sure we are complying with the\nrelevant IETF RFCs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp;Legal framework<\/strong>: with increased RPKI deployment,\norganisations using the system want to have a clear understanding concerning\nliability issues. Therefore, it is important to have a strong legal framework.\nAreas being assessed: Terms &amp; conditions and CPS (Certificate Practice\nStatement)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why now? Why at this moment?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With RPKI experiencing a huge growth in its deployment and becoming a\nkey part in the operations of the Internet, the RIPE NCC has been focusing on\nincreasing its resiliency, security and availability. In order to achieve that,\nsince August last year we have started the RPKI resiliency project, which has\nthe goal of having a RPKI Trust Anchor and Certificate Authority that is secure,\nreliable, highly available and with transparent and trustworthy operational\nprocedures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recent incidents ( <a href=\"https:\/\/labs.ripe.net\/Members\/nathalie_nathalie\/lessons-learned-on-improving-rpki\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/labs.ripe.net\/Members\/nathalie_nathalie\/lessons-learned-on-improving-rpki<\/a>) have\nraised concerns about the current state of global RPKI infrastructure, given\nthe increased dependency that network operators are having on the system and\nthe potential impact that its unavailability or lack of integrity can cause. We\nare taking these incidents very seriously and, since then, have started an\ninternal task force with the goal of reducing the risk of further\noutages.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What results have you achieved so far?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So far, we have started evaluating our DevOps implementation, in order\nto make sure operations and software side of RPKI are seamlessly streamlined.\nWe are also improving our software monitoring and identifying different parties\nto help assess our RPKI infrastructure and procedures. Our legal team is\nreviewing the Certificate Practice Statement so we can have it reviewed by our\ncommunity later this year. We expect most of the results of our effort later\nthis year, in Q4 of 2020. By that time, we will present our findings and\nimprovements to the community.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Now that the use of the service is becoming\nwidespread, do you think it will continue to function properly?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many elements within RPKI.
