The coronavirus pandemic found the technical team\nof Colombia’s National Disaster Risk Management Unit (UNGRD<\/a>) moving forward with the development\nand deployment of IPv6. This unexpected obstacle further strengthened the idea\nof \u200b\u200badvancing in the transition to the new Internet protocol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This momentum led the organization to register for\nthe latest edition of the IPv6 Challenge, a competition designed by LACNIC to\npromote the use of this protocol in Latin America and the Caribbean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The work of the Colombian team was recognized for\nits excellent quality standards and the methodologies it used. LACNIC News\ninterviewed Rafael Ignacio Sandoval\nMorales<\/strong>, General Project Manager at IPv6 Technology of Colombia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Colombia has always played an active role in the\nfield of ICTs. What prompted you to participate in the latest edition of the\nIPv6 challenge?<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

LACNIC’s\nIPv6 Challenge is an opportunity to show Latin America and particularly\nColombia what the National Disaster Risk Management Unit, a pioneer within its\nsector at the national level, has achieved in terms of its transition to the\nnew Internet protocol. Our experience will encourage others who are just starting\nthis process. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\nchose this moment to apply because IPv6 development and implementation at UNGRD\nwas mature enough, and the Challenge gave us the chance to validate this degree\nof maturity and to find out if what we had done met the standards and complied\nwith the methodologies proposed for this type of implementations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taking\none of the first places in LACNIC’s IPv6 Challenge places UNGRD among the\nwinners and makes us feel very proud for Colombia. We measured ourselves\nagainst many other projects from different countries and we were evaluated by a\ncommittee comprised of well-known Latin American experts. This means that we\ndid things more than well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What lessons did you learn as a result of the IPv6\nChallenge considering that your participation was marked by the appearance of\nthe COVID-19 virus?<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nappearance of COVID-19 represented a challenge for the technological\ninfrastructure of any entity, so we had to adjust all our processes and\nresources to meet user needs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nimplementation of IPv6 allowed us to continue providing various technological\nservices that are key to our organization, without many of our business\ndivisions suffering any interruptions. In fact, at the beginning of the\npandemic there was a significant increase in the demand for technological\nservices due to the relocation and virtualization of employment. That’s when we\nstarted to notice that our clients are consuming more services via IPv6,\nalthough this is transparent to the users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which initiative did you enter to the Challenge?\nHow many people were part of your working team and what results did you achieve\nthrough this process?<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

UNGRD\nis at the technological forefront and always strives to comply with the\nguidelines issued by the Colombian state, in this case, those defined for the\ntransition to IPv6. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To\ndo so, UNGRD organized a tender to select a consultancy services provider to\naccompany the process of transitioning to IPv6, with the goal of minimizing\npossible risks as well as increasing quality, knowledge and expertise. The team\nat UNGRD was made up by Luis Javier Barrera and Javier Soto, and was\naccompanied by an interdisciplinary team from IPv6 Technology SAS (www.ipv6technology.co<\/a>) who provided their advice for\nthe diagnosis, planning, implementation and commissioning stages. This synergy\nand collaboration throughout the project were what ultimately led to a\nsuccessful outcome. In addition, we have also advanced in compliance with the\nregulations provided by the Colombian Ministry of ICT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


\nWhat advice do you have for those organizations that would like to deploy IPv6\nin their networks?<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

IPv6\nis undoubtedly a challenge, but it is also a requirement for business\ncontinuity. While technical support will obviously be provided by the IT\ndepartment, we recommend raising the issue with senior management. \u201cIf you\ndon\u2019t implement IPv6, you will lose global connectivity and have trouble with\nthe adoption of new technologies.\u201d This is a luxury that no management can\nafford. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Likewise,\nthe staff should also be trained in the different areas of ICT that use IPv6,\nas the transition involves multiple changes compared to IPv4, both in terms of\nconfiguration as well as in terms of management and administration of\ninfrastructure and services. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because\nit is a medium- and long-term process, having clear goals and understanding the\nprocess is essential for defining priorities for the services that must be\ndeployed and implemented, aligning them with any programmed changes of\ntechnology, and planning for the necessary investments. Always considering\ncompatibility and compliance with the IPv6 protocol. Based on our experience, a\nproper selection of our workers and consultants if necessary is also very\nimportant. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In your opinion, is Colombia truly aware of IPv4\nexhaustion and of the need to deploy IPv6 to sustain the current Internet\nbusiness model?<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today,\nthere is greater awareness of IPv4 exhaustion. The country now has a better\nunderstanding of the need to bring all its platforms to IPv6 because no\nbusiness model will survive without Internet access. This is precisely why this\nnew protocol is essential. While there is still much work to do and articulate,\nthe efforts of the Ministry of ICT with its various regulations, standards and actions\nare also worth noting, as they have served to support the entities in the\ncountry.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
