So far this year,\nInternet route hijacking in the LACNIC region has decreased dramatically,\nreinforcing a trend that had already been noticed throughout 2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to research conducted by\nAlejandro Acosta<\/a>, R&D Coordinator at LACNIC, the sharp drop in the number of network hijacks comes at a time\nwhen IP address assignments and consequently Internet routing tables and\nprefixes have grown, which means that there is significant value in reducing the\nnumber of routing incidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The decrease in\nrouting incidents is the result of the region’s commitment to creating a secure\nand resilient Internet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to\nAcosta, there is a marked reduction in the number of hijacks each year, largely\nthanks to the adoption of best practices to increase network resilience, the\nimplementation and use of RPKI (resource certification) and the IRR (Internet\nRouting Registry).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

LACNIC has played\na key role in this sense, both by raising awareness on the subject as well as\nby offering training and developing tools to strengthen Internet routing\nsecurity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Regional\nInternet Registry for Latin America and the Caribbean has provided training on\nrouting security within the framework of its annual events, in addition to\nonline courses offered through the LACNIC Campus<\/a>, during network\noperators group meetings and working jointly with IXPs. Likewise, LACNIC\nlaunched the FORT Project<\/a> which includes\nthe creation of the open-source FORT Validator; FORT Monitor, a tool to\nidentify regional trends in route hijacking, and the FORT Report, which\nprovides a diagnosis of the impact of routing security on the experience of\nInternet users. LACNIC is also working on the MANRS (Mutually Agreed Norms for\nRouting Security) initiative supported by the Internet Society to promote the\nadoption of recommended best practices for both operators and IXPs, together\nwith LACNOG’s Training and Routing working groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLACNIC has\nplayed a significant role in best routing practices,\u201d said Guillermo Cicileo,\nHead of Internet Infrastructure Research and Development at LACNIC. The expert\nexplained that the regional IRR is a database that allows operators to specify their\nrouting policies and make them publicly available so that other actors who are\npart of the Internet routing system can use this information to configure their\nown devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hijacking<\/strong>. According to\nthe research conducted by Acosta in collaboration with Graciela Mart\u00ednez, Head\nof LACNIC CSIRT, Brazil is the country with the highest number of prefix\nhijacks in the region and the second highest worldwide. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this regard,\nCicileo highlighted the work of NIC.Br, which has managed to cut down routing\nincidents by almost fifty percent. The FORT Report<\/a> particularly stresses\nthe reduction of incidents thanks to \u201cthe actions of organizations such as\nNIC.Br that have worked with network operators to implement route filtering\nmeasures and thus mitigate BGP routing incidents.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NIC.Br has\norganized training activities on RPKI and Krill, and has worked strongly on\nRPKI adoption this past year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for the dates\non which route hijacks occur, Acosta compared how hijacks behaved between 2016\nand 2019. He grouped the events by month and presented an additional breakdown for\nIPv4 and IPv6.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cConsidering the\ntotal number of hijacks, November is the month with the most activity, while March\nis the one with the least.
