After almost 40 years using the TCP\/IP\nprotocols, the Internet is facing the need to evolve to support the billions of\ndevices already connected and the many millions more that are being connected\nat a dizzying rate as humans continue to add technology into our lives. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Given this scenario, the \u201cclassic\u201d\nversions of the Internet protocols are limiting the evolution of the network,\nso it is necessary to move towards more modern models, said LACNIC CTO Carlos\nMart\u00ednez during the webinar titled New Developments in Internet Protocols:<\/a> IPv6 and QUIC<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the webinar organized by\nLACNIC and the IEEE (Institute\nof Electrical and Electronics Engineers), Mart\u00ednez noted that IPv6 and QUIC represent\nthe evolution of the network and transport layers of the Internet protocol\nstack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While he highlighted the role that TCP\nhas played in the growth of the Internet since its creation in 1980, Mart\u00ednez\nadded that \u201cwhen so many adaptations have to be made, perhaps it is worth\nthinking about new options.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this sense, he stressed that,\nunlike IPv4, at network layer level IPv6 uses 128-bit addresses and a\nsimplified header.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mart\u00ednez observed that IPv6 has\nalready come a long way. \u201cBetween 32% and 33% of all Internet users worldwide\nare already using the protocol. It is simply a matter of time before it becomes\nthe dominant protocol worldwide.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for QUIC, the evolution at\nInternet transport layer level, Mart\u00ednez explained that the standard is not yet\nfully finalized. \u201cAlthough there are already some implementations, QUIC has not\nyet been standardized. Despite this, it is gaining traction and will surely\nbecome the dominant Internet transport layer over the next two or three years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

QUIC incorporates years of lessons\nlearned and a number of security optimizations and enhancements. \u201cQUIC is like\nan oldies party: it brings all the hits from the early 2000s into a single\nparty. For the first time, they can all work together,\u201d was how he summed up\nthe protocol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
