LACNIC has intensified its efforts to\ndevelop new tools and implement Internet routing security related actions in\norder to strengthen network protection mechanisms and guarantee connectivity in\nLatin America and the Caribbean. This is clear from the tutorial on Secure Routing<\/em> held during LACNIC 33,\nwith the participation of close to 240 people from 14 different countries of\nthe region. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guillermo Cicileo opened the tutorial\nby presenting data on recent routing events and incidents in Latin America and\nthe Caribbean obtained by the FORT project. According to his study, the number\nof incidents has fallen sharply over the past three years. While in 2017 there\nwas a total of 4,950 incidents, in 2018 they dropped to 3,286 and in 2019 they\ntotaled 2,889. According to Cicileo, \u201cThe goal of \u200b\u200bthis type of training is to\ntry to reduce these types of incidents that affect the global Internet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"\/<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

He noted that incidents can be caused\nby route hijacking (when an AS announces a prefix it does not actually\noriginate, whether accidentally or intentionally) and route leaks (the\npropagation of routing announcements beyond their intended scope).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cicileo observed that one of the\ntechniques used for incident prevention consists of comparing the announcements\nreceived via BGP against external sources. In this sense, he added that there\nare two technologies that contribute to the prevention of incidents: Internet\nRouting Registries (IRR) and Resource Public Key Infrastructure (RPKI). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Starting this year, LACNIC has an\nIRR. In this regard, the expert explained that LACNIC’s IRR is available to all\noperators in the region who have access to MiLACNIC, a platform that manages\nIRR information and uses the information already contained in RPKI and the\nLACNIC registry database. All objects generated in LACNIC’s IRR are public and\navailable through LACNIC’s FTP servers. They can also be queried through\ndifferent web interfaces and the WHOIS service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BGP Filtering.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tutorial continued with Mariela\nRocha’s presentation on how BGP works. The LACNIC expert pointed out that BGP\nbasically works by learning and announcing routes. \u201cWhen an AS announces a\nprefix, it is letting its neighbors know which prefixes can be reached through\nthis prefix. This is basically how BGP works,\u201d Rocha explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She then shared examples of peering,\nfilters and transit, and analyzed practical exercises with the audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Practical RPKI<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

To conclude, Erika Vega spoke about\nthe creation of ROAs and their use and validation with FORT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vega presented the FORT validator,<\/a> which is an open source\nRPKI validator developed as part of the FORT project, a joint initiative by\nLACNIC and NIC.MX.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tool seeks to contribute to the\ndeployment of RPKI to increase routing system security and resilience and\ndevelop a monitoring mechanism to study routing incidents in the region and\nexpose intentional hijacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
