This\nWednesday, ten qualified speakers from different parts of the region and the\nworld came together at the LACNIC Technical Forum (FTL) to present before an\nonline audience that averaged 250 participants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Presentations\nincluded topics such as network operation, the transition from IPv4 to IPv6, IPv6\ndeployment, RPKI measurements, DNSSEC, interconnection, the Internet of Things\n(IoT), and security vulnerabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For more\nthan 200 minutes divided into four sessions, ten speakers (Javier More<\/a>,\nMassimo Candela, Agust\u00edn Formoso, Karen O\u2019Donoghue, Richard Hummel, Claudio\nRisso, Tim Bruijnzeels, Hugo Salgado, Carlos Mart\u00ednez and Jos\u00e9 Camargo) shared\ntheir presentations with the technical community. This time, a simultaneous\ntranscription service was provided in three languages (English, Spanish and\nPortuguese). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe FTL is\na LACNIC initiative that tries to promote a space for our region and other\ncommunities to exchange information and share their experiences for the purpose\nof having information on the operational needs in our areas of responsibility,\u201d\nobserved LACNIC CTO Carlos Mart\u00ednez in his closing remarks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The level\nof the presentations has been improving each year, which makes the work of the\nProgram Committee increasingly challenging. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mart\u00ednez\nannounced that the 2021 LACNIC Technical Forum will take place in May of 2021\nand will maintain the current thematic areas. He urged the technical community\nto submit their questions to advance potential lines of work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Back and\nforth<\/strong>. The first presentation at the FTL was by Javier\nMore, who spoke about the experience with Microwave\nand Fiber Optic Transport Networks and Radio Spectrum for the Deployment of 5G\nNetworks in Peru<\/em>. He explained that, due to Peru’s geography, there is a\nsignificant concentration of fiber in the coastal areas, while much of the\ncountry’s forest region has greater difficulties in obtaining good quality\nconnections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Massimo\nCandela then presented his research on BGP\nMonitoring<\/em>, which\nallows monitoring announcements, even those that are not covered by an ROA<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next,\nAgust\u00edn Formoso shared De-bogonizing\n2a10::\/12<\/em>, a project that studies how the Internet reacts when a new\naddress block is assigned to an RIR. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In turn, in\nher presentation titled The Road to\nDeployment: Network Time Security<\/em>, Karen O’Donoghue concluded that a prototype\nimplementation model should be developed to improve Internet architecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Richard\nHummel then shared NETSCOUT’s research on the cyberthreat landscape. More than\n23,000 denial of service attacks occur each day. \u201cIf you convert this into\ndollars, you will see that it is a lot of money,\u201d the expert said during his\npresentation. \u201cHow much money are we losing by not preventing or mitigating\nthese attacks? How much does each of those attacks cost?\u201d Hummel asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next, Claudio\nRisso shared his work titled Designing\nOptimal iBGP \/ MPLS Topologies for ANTEL’s International Network<\/em>, and Tim\nBruijnzeels shared Trends in RPKI\nDeployment<\/em>, including relevant data on the development of security\nstandards and resource certification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later in\nthe afternoon, Hugo Salgado and Carlos Mart\u00ednez presented their work on SGA-1 and Algorithm Rotation in DNSSEC<\/em>, and\nJos\u00e9 Camargo spoke about an Alternative\nLow-Cost Solution for Controlling Volumetric Attacks in Latin America<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
