{"id":13303,"date":"2020-05-07T14:47:09","date_gmt":"2020-05-07T14:47:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/prensa.lacnic.net\/news?p=13303"},"modified":"2020-05-07T14:47:11","modified_gmt":"2020-05-07T14:47:11","slug":"brazilian-institute-for-mathematics-wins-the-ipv6-challenge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lacnic.net\/en\/brazilian-institute-for-mathematics-wins-the-ipv6-challenge\/","title":{"rendered":"Brazilian Institute for Mathematics Wins the IPv6 Challenge"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>The\nBrazilian National Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA) was the\nwinner of the seventh edition of the IPv6 Challenge organized by LACNIC, the\nresults of which were announced today during LACNIC 33.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The work\nsubmitted by Felipe Correia and Rosa Ladeira on IPv6 deployment in the network\nof the National Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA) \u2014 one of the\nresearch institutes of the Brazilian Ministry of Science and Technology \u2014 was\nchosen as this year&#8217;s winner. Given to the quality of the projects presented in\nthis edition of the IPv6 Challenge, this announcement came after a process of\ncareful evaluation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project\nby Luis Javier Barrera and Javier Soto on IPv6 deployment at the National Unit\nfor Disaster Risk Management of the Presidency of the Republic of Colombia came\nin second place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LACNIC\nespecially highlighted the work of the Evaluation Committee made up by Azael\nFern\u00e1ndez, Jorge Villa, Nicolas Antoniello and Alejandro Acosta, which allowed\ndetermining the winner this year. \u201cThe quality of the projects that were\nsubmitted to the Challenge made selecting the winner a very difficult task,\u201d\nobserved Alejandro Acosta, member of the IPv6 Challenge Evaluation Committee\nand R&amp;D Coordinator at LACNIC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Close to 40\ninitiatives were submitted for this edition, although some projects had to\nwithdraw because of cuts introduced in various organizations due to the\nCOVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nevertheless,\nmany went ahead and the \u201ctwo final projects in the running to win the Challenge\ncontained a detailed explanation of the work that had been done, including a\nrouting plan, testing, configuration excerpts, monitoring, security, partial\nnetwork topology, and other aspects. Much of their content is in the form of\ncharts, tables and images,\u201d Acosta added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since\nits&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/prensa.lacnic.net\/news\/en\/ipv6-en\/univates-of-brazil-wins-the-years-first-ipv6-challenge\">first\nedition<\/a>&nbsp;in 2017, the possibility of participating\nin&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/prensa.lacnic.net\/news\/en\/ipv6-en\/ipv6-challenge-stems-new-projects\">subsequent\neditions of the IPv6 Challenge<\/a> has led\nmany organizations around the region to organize their deployment of IPv6\nservices and substantially increase the use of this protocol. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>FRIDA and\n+Ra\u00edces.<\/strong> Carolina Caeiro, Development Projects Coordinator at\nLACNIC, informed LACNIC 33 participants that, starting this year, the FRIDA\nprogram will be funding projects with a technical focus in two of its three\ncategories: Internet Stability and Security, and Internet Access. She mentioned\nthat the application process will remain open until 22 May and that three\nprojects will each receive an award consisting of US$ 10,000 plus a full\nfellowship to attend LACNIC 34. Likewise, approximately eight projects to be\nexecuted within a period of 12 months will each receive a grant of between\nUS$&nbsp;10,000 and US$&nbsp;40,000.&nbsp; Caeiro\nalso added that the call for proposals is open to operators, universities and\ngovernment entities based in Latin America and the Caribbean. Among others,\nthis includes IXPs, NOGs, university networks, and professional networks. He explained that\nLACNIC&#8217;s role is to coordinate with the host organizations and those providing\nthe root servers (F-, I-, J-, K- and L- root servers).
