In the\nmidst of the current coronavirus pandemic, the Internet has proven to be a very\nuseful tool, particularly for the technical community of Latin America and the\nCaribbean, where it has made it possible to hold the first online LACNIC event.\nBy the second day of the meeting, more than 1520 participants had registered\nfor the event. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While\npresenting the 2019 Annual\nReport,<\/a> LACNIC CEO Oscar Robles highlighted how the\norganization is working with smaller ISPs in the region. This work has allowed\nan average increase of 30% in the number of new members in the countries the\norganization visited last year. In this sense, he observed that LACNIC had been\npresent at ten events attended by a total of more than 4,500 participants in\nArgentina, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador and Mexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"\/<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Colombia led the growth of new members with an\nincrease of 84% compared to 2018, followed by Mexico (64%), Ecuador (23%) and\nArgentina (14%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout\n2019, LACNIC registered 1,564 new members, which represented an 18.5% growth of\nits membership base and allowed the organization to close the year with 10,039\nmembers. Since then, more than 500 new organizations have joined LACNIC, which\nnow has a total of 10,568 members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Resource\nAssignment<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his\nreport, Robles highlighted the 8% increase in the number of assigned IPv4\naddresses compared to 2018. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transfers\nWithin the LACNIC Region<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"\/<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

LACNIC’s\nCEO reported that 23 IPv4 transfers were registered in the LACNIC region last\nyear. He added that, since the implementation of the policy allowing intra-RIR\ntransfers, LACNIC has registered a total of 55 transactions involving 305,000\nIP addresses. As the chart above shows, Colombia was the country that acquired\nthe highest number of addresses, while Paraguay let go of the most IPv4 address\nblocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New\nServices and Visits<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 2019\nreport also shows the new services launched by LACNIC, including the Internet\nRouting Registry,<\/a> a new channel for expressing\nrouting policies and improving Internet security and stability; IP-Based\nGeolocation (Geofeeds<\/a>); and the  MiLACNIC API<\/a>\nfor the automation of resource management operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for the\nprogram for involving members in LACNIC’s institutional life promoted by the\norganization since 2015, Robles reported that, in 2019, 53 visits were made in\nCura\u00e7ao, Belize, Costa Rica, Panama and Ecuador.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Campus\nand Webinars: More than 10,000 Participants<\/strong><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Robles\nnoted that the LACNIC\nCampus<\/a> allows LACNIC to stay close to its customers and the\ncommunity, particularly thanks to the constant increase in its training\nofferings. In this sense, new courses were added last year (an English version\nof the IPv6 course, Introduction to Network Management, Introduction to Network\nSecurity) and it was announced that a version 2.0 of the Basic IPv6 and IPv6 in\nLast-Mile Networks will be launched this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The report\npresented by Robles showed the significant growth in the number of students\nenrolled in the LACNIC Campus: 6764 in 2019 vs. 4471 in 2018. Robles also noted\nthat 3,074 students had passed the courses that were offered last year. \u201cA fairly high number for online standards,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Robles also\nmentioned the more than 20 webinars held during 2019, as well as the special\nevent that was organized to mark the 50th<\/sup> anniversary of the\nInternet, with the special participation of Internet pioneers Steve Crocker, Charles\nKline and Leonard Kleinrock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FORT, IPv6\nand AYITIC<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The report\nalso featured the Ayitic Goes Global project and its transformative role of\ntechnology for women and online training as an impact strategy in Latin America\nand the Caribbean. Robles noted that this effort will transcend, as Google will\nreplicate it in other countries of Central America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Robles also\nhighlighted the work of the FORT Project<\/a> (FORT\nValidator and FORT Monitoring) during 2019, a project developed by LACNIC and\nNIC MX with the support of the Open Technology Fund.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He stressed\nthe level of IPv6 deployment in the region, where the current penetration rate\nis 21% \u2013 last year the global penetration rate was 31%. \u201cWe must redouble our efforts in this sense,\u201d LACNIC’s CEO noted. One such program seeks to organize\npersonalized visits to decision-makers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Robles\nhighlighted the improvements to LACNIC’s internal processes which began to be\nintroduced in 2018 and will conclude this year with the purpose of having\nreliable information systems that will allow timely decision-making at the\nstrategic and operational levels. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Annual\nReport presented by Robles dedicated a chapter to the strengthening of the\norganization’s internal infrastructure with the addition of new blades and\nstorage technology, where LACNIC is migrating its virtualized services and\ninstalling new ones. This technology increases operational efficiency, provides\nhigh hardware availability, and improves the use of space and energy\nefficiency. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for the\ndevelopment of human capital, Robles reported that, for the eighth year in a\nrow, LACNIC ranked as one of the best places to work in Uruguay, having reached\nits best historical evaluation with an overall satisfaction level of 93%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
