How to Make the Most of Small Amounts of IPv4 and Advance IPv6 Deployment
26/05/2022
During different presentations at LACNIC 37, members of the LACNIC staff informed regional Internet service providers that obtaining IPv4 addresses is taking increasingly longer and stressed that, while still not a complete solution at this time, IPv6 has a series of advantages over the previous protocol.
In his presentation, LACNIC CTO Carlos Martínez emphasized that IPv6 can allow the operation of certain services and ease the burden of NAT in light of the difficulties presented by IPv4. He also noted that IPv6 can allow ISPs to implement a peering policy with CDNs and IXPs autonomously and independently of third parties. Likewise, he added that IPv6 is a viable tool that simplifies and mitigates IPv4 exhaustion.
As for the IPv4 addresses to which Internet providers may have access (if any), that space must be used as efficiently as possible. It should be noted that the remaining options for obtaining IPv4 take a long time. There is a long waitlist to obtain IPv4 addresses, leased addresses come with risks and challenges, and obtaining IPv4 addresses by way of a resource transfer involves a cost that can be up to 50 US dollars per address.
